Upon receiving the Keen Targhee II hiking boots, my initial impression was one of surprise.  These boots looked very stylish, like something I would wear with casual attire around town.  The Keen Targhee II mid hiking boots seemed very light, had very soft leather and a rubber sole with the typical Keen toe protection.  Upon putting the boots on, I immediately noticed a wide toe box that was very comfortable and a spongy sole that seemed to fit around my foot.  As I laced the boots and began to tie them, I noticed that the shoe laces would become lose when tying at the top.  I then tried several knots to get the laces to keep from slipping.

I began using the Keen Targhee II mid hiking boots on day hiking trips in the Ozark Mountains of Southwest Missouri and Northern Arkansas.  While hiking with a light day pack, I continued to notice the Keen Targhee II had plenty of room in the toe box.  This made walking very comfortable and gave my forefoot plenty of room to flex, but not enough room to move around and develop friction and or a blister.  The rubber out-sole seemed to grip well in a variety of terrain to include rock, mud, slick rock and gravel.  The lugs on the rubber sole did not get clogged when hiking through muddy terrain and seemed to grip, hold and then force the mud out of the lug, allowing for good traction.

The rubber toe protection, that seems to be kind of a staple of a Keen shoe, performed well by providing extra cushion, support and durability to the front toe.  I think this rubber toe protection will also add to the overall life of the boot, as the rubber is absorbing the impacts with rocks and debris and helping to save the boot itself.   While the leather outer of the boot continued to be stylish, it also proved to be tough and durable.  The Keen waterproof, breathable membrane allowed my foot to breath, even in hot and humid conditions, or when I was involved in highly aerobic activities.  This waterproof membrane also prevented my feet from getting wet as I crossed streams and creeks, but since the boots are only a mid-height boot, I had to be careful not to get into water that was very deep.

I continued to utilize the Keen Targhee II Mid hiking boots over the next several months on a variety of day hikes and quick overnight hikes carrying very little weight.  The Targhee II boots continued to look great, be super comfortable, provide excellent traction and be durable.  I enjoyed wearing the boots so much, that I even began to wear them around town and found them to be a great casual shoe or boot to wear with jeans on rainy days, days with a little snow in the air or doing yard work around the house.  These features make the Keen boots very versatile and allow the user to be able to utilize the boots in various settings, not just the outdoors.   I did continue to have trouble with the laces staying tied and would like the boots to be a bit taller to help with extra ankle support and water crossings.

After several months of use, the Keen Targhee II boots continued to perform well and look great.  The sole and leather showed little signs of wear and even the toe, while a bit scuffed, continued to be durable and perform as new.  Cleaning the Keen Targhee II boots was very easy and could be done with a clean damp cloth or when they really needed a good cleaning, I used warm water and a scrub brush.  After a good scrubbing, I would treat the leather with Nikwax to help protect the leather and the boot would look like new.  When not in use, I stored the Keen Targhee boots in my garage with my other hiking boots.

The Keen Targhee II Mid hiking boots are an excellent choice for a day hiking boot.  The Targhee II can take the abuse from the outdoors and then be worn with jeans or shorts around town.  These boots are super comfortable, durable, light weight and look great.  The leather is not only stylish, but performs well in the outdoors.  The Keen Targhee II boot is waterproof, breathes well and is much more durable that first impressions would lead you to believe.
