This is the Hiking Guide Certification Course through the American Hiking Guides Association (AHGA). This class is geared toward anyone that is looking to enter the world of outdoor guiding and recreation and people that may be involved as a leader in their local hiking group, Boy Scout Leader, State Park interpreter, outdoor volunteer, outdoor retailer, or anyone wanting to improve their knowledge and skills in the outdoors. The class is 2 days with the first day consisting of classroom instruction, followed by a written test that you must pass. Day 2 will consist entirely of practical exercises that you must pass.
The Hiking Guide Certification course will consist of instruction in group management, leadership, survival skills, wilderness medicine, land navigation, animal safety, food preparation, Leave No Trace Ethics, gear selection and use, permits, physical fitness and other topics. Upon completion and passing of this course, you can submit your paperwork and per-requisite training to the AHGA for your certification. This certification will be for a Hiking Guide which consists of day trips only, but does act as a per-requisite for the Backpacking Guide Certification Course and the Mountain Leader training program. Prerequisites for this class are basic and intermediate survival, land navigation, wilderness first-aid and CPR certification. If you have taken these classes with us, you are good to go, if you have taken them with another provider, that provider must be approved by the AHGA.
You must pay the cost of the class 30 days in advance to hold your spot. Upon time of payment, you will receive the study booklet in electronic format to help you study for the class.
