This is our annual fitness hike and was originally set up helping our friends to test their fitness level for mountaineering trips and expeditions, but has evolved into a fun way to test your overall fitness and have a great time in the outdoors.
The hike itself will start at the Compton Trail head and will consist of going down the canyon to either the Hemmed in Hollow waterfall, or the Buffalo River and then back up the mountain. You will complete this three (3) times, all while carrying a 40 pound backpack. If you do not want to carry a pack you are welcome not to, but if you really want to test yourself, carrying the weight is important. If you are fit, you will be able to complete the challenge in around 6 hours, everyone should be done in the 7 to 7.5 hour range. This is a fun and challenging event, so do not let it intimidate you and do not be scared. This is a great way to meet a lot of fun and fit people, find a base line for where you want your fitness to be for the outdoors and prepare yourself for future trips, whether local backpacking trips with our group, expeditions, or trips out of the area.
Make sure you bring water, but you will have access to water along the way, bring snacks, you will need to refuel your body and a good head lamp as we will start in the dark. Why do we start at 0300 hours? In the past, we used to start around 0900 hours, but found the heat and humidity really was hard on many of the participants and that if we start at 0300 hours and finish around 1000 hours, everyone seems to do much better. If you are coming from Springfield, we will meet at the Casey’ at US 65 and Mo 14 in Ozark, Missouri around 0100 hours, or you can meet us at the Compton Trail head around 0230 hours. We will start at 0300 hours.
