Intro to Backpacking, including Gear, Clothing and Equipment

This is the premier introduction to backpacking class in the mid-west.  This class will cater to beginners and experienced backpackers alike and cover basic backpacking skills, everything you want to know about clothing, equipment and gear.   We will also have the most wide ranging types of gear to display and let each student check out during the class.  If you would like to improve your skills or just want to learn, this is the class for you.  Some of the topics that the class will cover are: 

-Selection of proper gear

-Backpacks (Sizing, fitting, adjusting, how to pick the correct one)

-Boot selection, fit, how to clean, and walk properly

-Trekking poles

-Sleeping pads and sleeping bags

-Stoves, camp equipment and food


-Trip preparation

-Gear Repair

-Water filters

-Outdoor clothing (Softshells, hardshells, base layers, hats, gloves, down, fleece, technical pieces, layering, merino vs. synthetic, hydrid pieces

-Backpacking on a budget

-Weather preparation

-Fitness levels

-Backpacking skills (Use of foot position, trekking poles, scrambling, stream crossings, wildlife, mileage, pack weight)

-Trail hiking v. Bushwhacking
