The Land Navigation class will cover the basic use of topographical maps and a compass. The class will cover basic map nomenclature, proper use and reading of maps, orientating your map, taking a bearing from a map, identifying terrain from a map and transferring this over to real life situation. This class will consist of 2-3 hours of classroom instruction and various exercises utilizing a map and compass in the classroom. Once each student has a basic understanding, we will conduct 2 to 3 hours of practical exercises in a wilderness setting about 20 minutes south of Springfield, Missouri. Each student will need an orienteering compass, notebook and writing utensil and appropriate clothing, water etc for being in the wilderness for the practical exercises. If you have a topographical map of any kind it would be helpful to bring it for the classroom portion of class, but not required. There will be a 1 hour break for lunch, which is not provided. Cost for the class is $35.00 if you sign up and pay in advance, or $45.00 the day of the event, if spots are available, but I would not depend on spots being open as this is a popular class.
