This event is set up not only for our members that will be going on various trips this summer, but for anyone that would just like to hike down to Hemmed and Hollow and/or test their fitness level. For those wanting to test their fitness, we will hike down the Compton Trail to the Hemmed and Hollow waterfall and/or Buffalo River and back to the Compton trail head a total of 3 times. This will be approximately 13.5 miles and consist of around 4,600 feet of elevation gain. These participants will also be carrying a 40 pound backpack. If you would just like to go along to see what the event is like, or just go down once to see the waterfall and the river, please do so, everyone is invited. Due to the heat considerations, we will start the hike at Compton at 3 am sharp and should be complete by 11 am.

This is a great beginning cave exploration trip. We will head down to Arkansas early in the morning and spend several hours in the cave. The cave itself has large rooms and you will be able to walk around most of the time. There are a couple of areas that will require some leaning over and possibly crawling. There will be no rope work or rappelling required. We will have some extra helmets to loan out, but everyone will need some good clothing that you can get wet and muddy, a headlamp, good boots and a helmet. I would also recommend extra batteries and a secondary light source. Due obvious reasons, we will will have a limit of 14 that can attend this event. Starting May 1, you can RSVP and hold your spot. If we get more than 14, we will start a waiting list for cancellations. This will be a good event and give everyone a chance to explore the underground world.
May 25, 2013
This will be our annual Memorial Day Weekend Backpacking trip and will consist of hiking the Buffalo River Trail from Ponca to Pruitt for a total of 27 miles. You can also join us on any one of the sections if you do not wish to complete the entire trip.
May 11, 2013
This is a great little day hike from the Buffalo River at Kyles Landing, up to the Eye of the Needle in the heart of Indian Creek. This hike is about 6 miles total and does require a short scramble near the Eye of the Needle. There is no maintained trail on this hike, but past hikers have worn a path. There are numerous waterfalls, rock formations and great views on this hike. You might need water shoes and this will be a day hike. This is a moderate to strenuous hike, with several ledges.
May 4, 2013
This will be our annual float trip on the upper Buffalo River. We will float from Ponca, or Steel Creek, depending on the water level and camp for the night around Horseshoe, near the Jumping Rock. The net day we will finish the float down to Kyles Landing. You are free to bring your own canoes or kayaks, or you can rent one from a couple of places in Ponca.
April 27, 2013
Pedestal Rocks is a fun and easy little hike of 4 miles, with some really great rock formations and pedestals. At the end of the hike, we will head just down the road to Sam’s Throne, where we will hike the 2.5 mile trek around the Throne and then scramble up the Catacombs. At the end of the day you can head home, or you can camp at Sam’s Throne, where we will do a little more scrambling, or feel free to engage in some rock climbing.

There are no trails in the area and the Leatherwood Wilderness is the largest continuous forest in the Eastern United States.

The Women’s Backpacking Clinic is a great event to meet other ladies who love the outdoors and learn from Carmen Hallock, a certified Backpacking Guide and Instructor. The class will assist ladies who want to learn more about backpacking and will be hands on over the course of the two days. You will learn about gear, navigating in the outdoors, staying warm, water, food, fitness among other things. The great thing about this clinic is that it is not classroom, but rather in the field, allowing each person to learn as you go, plus a great get-away weekend for the ladies. This class is popular and will be limited to 12 people. RSVP for the event to hold your spot. Cost for the class is $10.00, which must be paid ahead of time. Email us if you need more information.

This is an optional hike for all those traveling to Iceland and Peru in July, but it is highly encouraged to test your fitness level. We will hike the Compton Trail down to Hemmed and Hollow Falls and back with a 40 pound backpack. For the trekkers, you will be asked to accomplish this 2 times, for the mountaineers, you will be asked to accomplish this 3 times. It is a great way to test your mental and physical fitness level, 4 weeks before the trips. Everyone else is also invited to attend, just to hike down to the falls one time, or more if you are looking for a great workout.
