Packing Food for Hiking

  • Most hikers will use about 3,500 calories or 1.5 to 2 pounds of food per day. If you carry more, you are carrying dead weight
  • During very cold conditions you might want to increase to 5,000 calories per day or 2 to 2.5 pounds per day
  • Bring Foods you like, not what you think you should eat
  • Minimize weight with energy dense foods: trail mix, peanut butter, chocolate, protein bars, roasted nuts
  • Keep meals simple since you will be tired
